The “Unplanned Movie”
still showing in the Area:

This is an important Movie we should promote, attend and encourage family and friends to view. It shows the truth about abortion in our Country and depicts the true story of Abby Johnson who was a Director at a Planned Parenthood clinic until one day "What She Saw Changed Everything."

Very powerful and so well done. Not only exposes the truth but great message of love and redemption too.

UPDATED WITH FATHER CARROLL'S REFLECTION ON THE MOVIE:

On Friday March 29th Father Hoa, Deacon Michael and his wife Patricia, and myself went to the Regal Theaters in West Manchester Township to view the movie “Unplanned” which is the story of Abby Johnson who formally worked for Planned Parenthood, until she witnessed the abortion procedure that changed her life forever.  Today Abby Johnson is an advocate for life.

“Unplanned” is a powerful movie for a variety of reasons.  First it gives us an insight into the abortion procedure which in itself is disturbing, but also the potential physical complications that can come with it.  We also see in some cases the emotional toll having an abortion and witnessing an abortion can have on individuals.  Secondly, the movie shows the human aspect of everyone involved.  As it says on the “Unplanned” movie website, “All Abby Johnson ever wanted to do was help women.”  Abby went to work for Planned Parenthood because she wanted to help others.  Even though it is morally reprehensible for any organization to support the direct taking of innocent life, especially the unborn, one must understand that individuals are drawn into such organizations because they are persuaded that they are doing something good.

The movie portrayed Shawn Carney, the President and Founder for 40 Days for life.  In the movie his group is seen outside the abortion clinic where Abby Johnson worked.  One of the things that stood out about his group is that they simply prayed outside the clinic peacefully.  Shawn’s wife is seen in the movie befriending Abby who was the clinic director.  For those of us in the pro-life movement we must be reminded that those who work for organizations such as Planned Parenthood are children of God and must always be treated with dignity and respect.  Having viewed the film it is my belief it was that dignity and respect that led Abby to approach Sean and his organization after coming to terms with the horrible reality of abortion.  Never under estimate the power of prayer and just simply being a good Christian witness.

After coming to the realization of the realities of abortion it led Abby to make some changes.  Her first step was to make the decision to resign from Planned Parenthood.  After she made the choice to resign we see her in the film struggling coming to terms with the fact that she participated in over 22,000 abortions.  Not only was she struggling to come to term with that but also the two abortions she had earlier in her life.  In the movie we see her full conversion with her coming to the realization of God’s compassion, kindness, love, and mercy.

While having an abortion may not have an immediate outward effect on an individual, down the road it can take a deep emotional toll on not just the individual but also those around them.  As Catholics we are truly blessed that if we seek it, God will embrace us with compassion, love, and mercy.  We can find peace starting with the sacrament of reconciliation.  As I have mentioned before I try to balance the need for preaching the clear truth while at the same time recognizing that there are people hurting from this within our family.  For those who are hurting, please do not hesitate to bring it to the Lord.  Do not allow that fear to keep you from experiencing the fullness of God’s love!

I would encourage anyone who struggles with the Church’s teaching on life to go see the movie.  For those who are in the Pro-Life movement I would encourage them to see the movie as well.  Don’t go into the movie with a plan.  Be unplanned and go into the movie with an open heart and mind.  Be prepared to be moved!   While this movie may trigger emotions especially those who have had or encouraged someone to have or participated in an abortion, there is the very powerful message of redemption.  It is never too late to turn back to God.  May we always keep that in the front of our hearts and minds!
